 Away from the Sun [Hawkgirl]
« Thread Started on Nov 21, 2008, 1:32am »

Time of Day: Mid-Morning
Location(s): Metropolis
Previous Thread Name: None
Characters Appearing: Superman; Hawkgirl
NPCs used: None
Plot Summary: Clark finds himself falling and it's Hawkgirl to the rescue. Can Clark help out the winged wonder contact the Metropolis Marvel without letting his secret slip? And why did Clark find himself taking a tumble out of a window in the first place?

Before falling he remembers gray but does not remember anything prior to that or the falling. He hears Lois voice fade away from him. The wind wipes at super-sensitive skin sending his tie all of flutter. His suit jacket, pinned by the weightlessness of the fall, to his back shuffled uncomfortably. His glasses shuttered against his face but would not fall away. In the freeing fall that came, he noticed eyes watching him from all around. People leered from windows and buildings. Lois's scream had caused ears to peek up and faces to turn toward the window to watch the poor fool plummet. He knew that he had seconds before he reached the ground. His heart thumped. There were so many eyes. Too many to not notice a man disappearing during his fall to his apparent death. Hyper-analytical whirled as computed the proper solution to this dilemma. One that would allow him to retain his identity while simultaneously ceasing his tumbling thorough the empty space and having to explain to everyone just how a 220lb farm boy from the middle of nowhere can survive a eighty fifth floor of the Daily Planet building. Just as his mind stumbled upon a solution involving bottled lightning, he felt his body sag onto a pair of arm. The air stop and the rushing sound was subsumed by a flap of wings. He looked up into the bright, jeweled color eyed of the hawk-shaped helm. In a moment, his flying savior was named.

The morning air was pleasant and the sun began to set high into the sky. After just completing her first mission Hawkgirl was not far from the falling man. Plummeting from the building from all the way up there. This guy sure was lucky to be saved by Hawkgirl. If she didn't come who knew what could of happened.

Holding him in her arms, a big fella he was, the man suddenly recited her name. "Hawkgirl." He said. Wait... Did she know him? I guess he could of figured out her name by her large wings. Its rare you ever see someone with the wings of a hawk, swooping down to save you. "No problem citizen its all in a days work." Trying to act all hero superior like. "What happened to you?"

Shifting the gravel upon the roof of the Daily Planet, he found his ground. To Clark, down was always relative, but nothing would quite beat the feel of terra underfoot. Or the nearest gravel facsimile. Two hundred and twenty pound frame was placed gingerly on the ground. Heels of his generic brown loafers clicked as they reached the ground. Clark looked up the lithe figure whose mighty wing spread majestically beneath a corona of the sun. Her tiny hands and sturdy but slender arms was somehow capable of catching and holding a man his size without injury or strain on her part or, hypothetically, his. He flattened down his ties. Fixed back his mussy hair that had fallen out of place and ensured that his glasses had remained in the upright position when he turned his eyes to her and gave her a thankful relieved sigh. " Thank you. ", he said breathless. " That kind of happens a lot in this town. Usually, it's Superman that'll catch us…but you did a good job. " He heard her question and thought of the gray. Beyond that, there was nothing. He remembered a moment before, standing up to open a window and then…gray. Then falling. It was strange and in the silence of his mind he made a note to follow it up thorough all sensory outlets. " I don't know why. Must have blacked out. ", he said with a shake of his head, as if dislodging a feeling from his mind. " I'm sorry. "

He pulled out a pen and pad. " Your name is Hawkgirl, right? Why are you here in Metropolis? ". There was a sudden shift in demeanor. Clark fell into writing mode at the moments notice as his pen furiously scrambled against the page. " Are you here to see Superman? Is this anyway League related? Are the citizens of Metropolis in danger? Where is Superman? Do you know his whereabouts? How do you spell your name…? " he asked in a rapid flurry.

Wasn't he an inquisitive fellow. All these questions were just too much for Hawkgirl. Its only been a couple weeks since she has joined the league, it wasn't like she was a Justice League genius. They rarely gave her missions and to get here she had to take matters into her own hands. Still wondering why they wouldn't give her a mission.

"I had to come out here all on my own. The leaguers rarely ever give me a mission. I thought when I joined the Justice League i'd be getting active. I am seriously thinking of leaving." She was serious. All she was thinking was that this was a waste of time. Instead she could be at college learning about stuff. But she gave that up to come here...... stupid mistake. Well at-least thats what shes thinking.

Something was off about this man. He didn't seem to scared that he was almost about to die. Normal people usually cry to their death.... this guy was calm the whole time. "Are you sure your ok?" Saying as she eyed the man suspiciously.

He cleared his throat and looked up from his pad, over his glasses where his crystal blue eyes looked up the hawk-helmed, mace-wielding superheroine. He thought first to answer her question before following up with his own. " Everyone falls in Metropolis. Most people get used to it. " He placed hand on his hips, resting his weight on his back foot. " Have you talk to any of the other Leaguers? ". A small frown tugged at his lips, but he kept his face straight. Clark was aware that he had been neglected his League duties. It had been weeks since he had attended a meeting. He knew that he was well overdo for a proper talk with the young rookie Leaguer. Before he could continue his line of question, the door open behind him. He turned and as his wife emerged, a smile formed on his face. She headed toward him, her heels shuffling gravel aside and she gratefully arms around him. She didn't say a word. They simply embraced for a moment. He silently enjoyed her arms.

When she pulled away, however.

" What the hell is wrong with you, Smallville? " she said and slapped his arm. Instinctively, he feign pain and whispered a soft " ow ". " What? I…What? " he began but was quickly cut off. " One minute you're okay, the next minute you're jumping out the window. What gives? " Her eyes narrowed in a way that spell doomed for any in her path. Superman had been on of the few to take the full impact of Darkseid omega effect without so much as a scar, but when Lois Lane glared it sent a shiver down his back. He gave her a strange look.

" What? "
She looked back with a look that could freeze air.
" ' What ' What? "
" Lois I…I don't remember. One minute, I'm at a minute. Next mintue…"
He paused as something struck him and turned toward Hawkgirl. " Hawkgirl did you…did you hear anything as you were flying down? "
Lois slapped his arm again. " Smallville, she's not a real hawk. I doubt she has superhearing. "

The two exchanged looks.

Lois Lane was much more than a wife. She was a co-pilot. Years of shared secrets had brought them so close that they could anticipate each other's very thoughts. Clark was sure that Lois could sense that something was awry, but in his secret a mild-mannered reporter he wasn't in much position to act upon it. As the Man of Steel, however.

" I'll get Jimmy's watch. ", he said and headed toward the rooftop door.

Hawkgirl herself could not understand what they were going through. Love wasn't something she was particularly good with so she was a little uncomfortable. The last time she was told she was loved was by some freaky hawk guy named, Hawkman. He told her they were destined to be together and were past lovers dating back all the way to the Egyptian era. Last time she checked she was still a young woman and she had no past memories of her days in "Egypt".

It was weird though. She did sometimes have blurred visions of things she did not remember doing. But that didn't have her convinced she was this so called reincarnation of his lover. Flat out denying whatever he said she told him to leave her alone and they haven't seen each other since then. From that day on she has been working on her life, attending college and being asked to be a member of the Justice League.

But so far this whole Justice League thing was turning out as planned. She wasn't given any missions or even talked to ever since she stepped forth on the Watch Tower. But hearing the mans words she knew what she had to do. As rash as she was she would have to channel that into something good. Being mad and complaining about everything wasn't something she should be doing. Instead she should be bugging the hell out of the Justice League commanders and asking them why the hell are you ignoring me.....

"Is that all you are needing me for?" She asked, starting to feel a little queasy about the whole kissing.... lovey dovey play they were performing in-front of her. Wings gently grazing themselves Hawkgirl was ready to leave. But if there was was something else the man or woman needed her for now would be the time to speak.

Lois turned back, trying not to smile. " Give it a second, bird-girl. Smallville over there is going to go fetch him. " Just as her lips closed around the word, a flash of blue and red took to the sky and stopped. Blurred features coalesced into a tall and broad form clad in blue and red. His orange and red shield stretched across his trunk like chest. His muscular arm folded in front of him. A curious stare coming out from his squinted but deeply blue eyes. A S-curl cue danced in the slim updraft. " I was summoned? ", he said with a smile and he came in for a landing. Red booted soles shuffled the gravel ground underfoot as he turned toward the young woman. " I was in Vega when I heard the signal watch. What's going one, Hawkgirl? ", he said with a comfortable approach.

What had just happened? Hawkgirl was confused. How did this "common man" know Superman? All these questions scattered themselves within her head, trying to piece themselves together. "Superman?" She was starting to think that something was up. There is no way Superman would be affiliated with a civilian. If he was the man and this woman would know of his secret identity. "And I did not... send for you..." It was like one of those surprise birthday party moments, you didn't know what to think.

Her wings flapped down back to her backside. Hawkgirl didn't know who this smallville was either. The woman kept saying "Smallville" as if Hawkgirl knew what or who that was. But after seeing the man leave she figured it was a silly nickname they had for each other. They must be close... romanticly.. She thought.

Since he was here she mass well get to the point. Even though she had talked to some of the other "HEAD LEAGUERS" about getting more missions. She didn't think they would listen to well to her. Thinking she might be an "AMATEUR" or something. Her age was not something of a factor. Hawkgirl could hold her own by herself. If she didn't get a mission soon she would find herself leaving the Justice League. "Well... since your here..." Pausing at the end. "Would you mind telling me why I have not been given any missions?" She hoped he could answer this.... even though he was never really active in the League.

Brow raised. A small smile playing on his lips. He approached. " Yeah. I couldn't make it to their wedding. I sent a toaster, but I don't know if they got it ", he said in a small aside to Hawkgirl before he waved a small hello to the reporter in the heeled pumps and a black work-skirt. " Afternoon, Boy Scout. Where were you when my husband was busy nearly becoming street pizza? " Squinted eyes narrowed. Lois was going to play this game until the wheels fell off. He figured that he should go with it. " Like I said, Lois. There was an emergency situation elsewhere. I can't be in Metropolis all the time. " . Clark hated to lie, but he understood how precious his secret was and how far he would have to go to ensure that no one suspected that Superman and Clark Kent were one in the same. Hawkgirl was smart, with sharp instincts and a warrior's attitude. She could smell a facade from a mile a way. Hence, Clark tried to keep his voice level and steady as he spoke to his secret wife. His eyes knowing what his tongue hid. " You should tell your husband to a little bit more careful. I know how Mr. Kent is. "

Lois fought a smile. She wasn't a professional actress. Unlike Clark, she never had years of training in the methodologies of play-acting. They made it up as they went and sometimes she could barely hold her mask in place. It warmed his heart to know that his wife would do anything to ensure that his secret remain safe, but it was disconcerting how hard it was for her. " Hey hey hey. That's my husband you're talking about there, big blue. " She replied. " Speaking of which, I should go check on Smallville. He's probably having a delayed anxiety attack. " Superman raised a brow. " He has those? ", he asked. " You don't wanna know. " He and Hawkgirl watched her go. The door closed behind her and finally the two leaguers were alone. "…So. " he began, but by then she had already drilled him with her inquiry.

He remained silent for a moment as he gave her question do diligence. When he was clear to speak, he simply gestured to the crystal blue sky above them. " Let's fly and talk. ", he said and took off at a reasonable speed. From above, Metropolis tinkered in the mid-morning light. Glass castles of the city called " The City of Tomorrow " by some. A shot of pride sped thorough him as they climbed up to half a mile, where the entirety of New Troy below them. Clark always liked to show visitors around to his city, especially his esteemed colleagues in The Justice League. " I know that the Justice League is a little different than what you're used to in the Society. I admit, the League is a lot less formal. " His stared straight ahead as he banked right, swooping low between a hanging arch, trusting that she could follow. " We're not you're superior, Hawkgirl. We are your partners.". He swooped in low, near enough so that the cheers from below could reach him. He smiled at his fellow Metroplians and gave them a smile. He turned to Kendra, blue hues looking at the golden eyed helms as it caught the sun. " The League is here to help. ' Whenever one challenge is too great for anyone of our members, we band together as the world's greatest superheroes ' " He paused. " The President's words, not mine. " He added.

She didn't exactly agree with what he was saying. Was he not one of the original leaguers? The leaguers who formed the Justice League? Yes he was.... She paused for a moment to try and come up with something off the top of her head. "Well I guess... you can say that." She would've never thought the president was on the Justice League's side. He wasn't exactly giving off any friendly gestures. But he was a president. He had to be strong for his people.

"Well.. when you put it that way.. I guess so." She shouldn't need anyones permission to do what she wanted. She was above the age of 18, no? That legally made her an adult and whatever she wanted was what she wanted. Seeing how well he kept himself with the public and being a superhero, it made Hawkgirl kinda jealous. "Were you the same way at first?" The invincible man had to of stumbled at-least once or twice.

" You mean when I first started? ", he asked, his palm upturned. Brow furrowed in thought as he disappeared into his memory. Had it really been fifteen years? A brightness lit his squinted eye. A smile emerged. " My first time out…could barely speak. It was a shuttle that had malfunctioned in low orbit and I went in to help. I guided it down and when I did, I was surrounded by press. Boy was my face flushed. I got out of there as fast as I could, actually. " A wistful looked crossed his face. He shook the memories away from his head. " That was actually my first week in to- " His head turned suddenly, craning his neck toward an unmistakable sound. The sound of screaming. " Keep up. " He stated, shifting his shoulder as he pointed his body easterly. Without hesitation, his form shot forward into the heart of the city, hands in front of him as he steered himself around spires and edifices toward his goal.

As he approached the crane lurched. It uttered a song of twisting metal. An unsteady pall fell over the ground below. An anxious anticipation as the pedestrians below waited for it's inevitable fall. All staring up with a gasp clutched in their throat, waiting for it to turn into a scream. He moved in fast, swooping in underneath the cuboid station as the metal gave on more dying groan and began to snap free from it's placements. It fell faster than he could anticipate. Fortunately for the flailing man inside the control box, it did not fall faster than he could move and the mammoth pillar shuttered. His palms laid flat beneath the glass, he pushed against it, holding it aloft. The crane gave a shutter and a cry. Pieces of steel and iron fell gingerly toward the ground but he could not pull himself away from his task to stop them. He could only hope that his fellow Leaguer could consider themselves with the safety of others as he began to push the crane station right.
